The change you’ll bring us won’t be popular.

Summary

This video transcript presents a reflective and motivational discourse on the nature of change, particularly when introducing innovations or improvements that challenge existing systems, traditions, and cultures. The speaker emphasizes that meaningful change is rarely popular initially because it disrupts established ways of doing things and unsettles those invested in the status quo. Despite this resistance, the speaker encourages perseverance, highlighting the critical need for better change and the importance of not being discouraged by initial unpopularity.

Key Insights

  • Change is inherently unpopular at first:
Any change that benefits people and challenges existing systems, traditions, or providers is often met with resistance and skepticism.
  • Discouragement is common but should be resisted:
Creators and promoters of change frequently feel disheartened when their ideas don’t gain immediate acceptance. However, this reaction is typical and should not stop progress.
  • More and better change is needed:
The speaker underlines that society requires continuous improvement and innovation, implying that change agents play an essential role.
  • Marketing as leadership:
A central concept introduced is the idea that marketing is a form of leadership. It involves inspiring and motivating people to adopt new ideas or behaviors, even when there is no direct obligation or financial incentive.
  • Leadership without authority:
Unlike traditional leadership, where employees follow directions due to employment contracts, marketing leadership engages people who are not obligated—they join and believe based on vision and trust.
  • Marketplace as the ultimate organization:
Customers or consumers represent an organization that marketers lead by influencing beliefs and behaviors, making marketing a unique and powerful form of leadership.
  • Change challenges traditions and can cause annoyance:
Change may frustrate those accustomed to the old ways, but it remains necessary despite opposition.

Hey, welcome. Happy New Year’s Eve and thanks for spending a few minutes of it with me. Um, today I just want to go over the idea of change and that whenever there is a change to be made, a change for someone’s benefit, a change that you truly believe in, it’s not necessarily going to be popular and most often it won’t be popular. There is a system, a way of doing things. There’s a culture, there’s tradition, there’s existing providers. So many things want things to stay the way they are that

00:00:32
regardless of how profound and how impactful your change is, it won’t be popular. And this is incredibly important to understand because so many people get discouraged when they see their change that they believe in, try to bring it into the marketplace, don’t see it catching on. And for that reason, they get discouraged. We we need more change. We need better change. And so don’t let that discourage you. Don’t let the lack of popularity discourage you or to stop you from bringing about the change that we need.

So, if you’ve watched my videos, perhaps you’re beginning to understand that more and more um marketing is leadership. Getting people to do things is leadership. It it well, it’s a form of marketing. Um and you’re hopefully realizing that the marketplace, the customers of people you get to serve are the ultimate uh is the ultimate organization. If you look at it from a leadership perspective, you might have like in traditional leadership, you might have your employees, um people who

00:01:34
are doing your bidding because you’re paying them. But then you move on to different types of organizations, organizations that are volunteerrun. And when you get to those, you get to understand that um this is true leadership. Now there is no strings attached. I can’t um have them do my bidding because I’m paying their salary. So it becomes purely about vision. It becomes about leadership. It becomes about um an organization that is mutually benefiting the members and so on. And as you extend this analogy, you

00:02:09
realize that marketing is the ultimate form of leadership where we get to engage with people who don’t have to pay your company anything yet we’re asking them to join and to believe in the change that we’re proposing. So those are just some ideas for you to think about uh when it is your when it is your turn to bring about the change when you do see that glimpse of a better path forward and it’s your turn to bring that to us as consumers and as a marketplace. Um I hope you’ll understand

00:02:41
that your change probably won’t be popular. It’ll probably annoy a lot of people. It’s annoying to hear that what someone’s been doing for their lifetime was not the best way to do something. But more than ever, that change is still necessary. And regardless of what the haters, what the um detractors will say, we still need it. So go out there and give it to us. All right. Thanks.
