Stop failing the marshmallow test. Shun short-term tactics, hacks, and vanity metrics.

Summary

This video addresses the evolution of digital marketing strategies, focusing on the shift from short-term tactical “hacks” to long-term value creation for users. The speaker emphasizes that many common marketing shortcuts, such as optimizing domain names with city or specialty keywords (e.g., dental, orthodontics), once provided an advantage but have largely lost their effectiveness due to platform algorithm updates designed to neutralize these tactics.

Key Insights

  • Decline of Marketing Hacks: Traditional “hacks,” like keyword-stuffed URLs or SEO tricks (e.g., optimized H1 tags, alt text), have been phased out as platforms identify and patch these manipulative tactics.
  • Shift to Real Signals: Modern digital marketing success depends on true behavioral signals—genuine user engagement and value—rather than superficial optimizations.
  • Platform Evolution: Search engines and other platforms are continuously updating their algorithms to better align rankings with actual user value rather than tactical manipulation.
  • Creating True Value: The focus should be on creating meaningful value for the target audience rather than trying to “game” the system. This means understanding the needs, desires, and feelings of the people a practice serves.
  • AI and New Technologies: With emerging technologies like AI chat (e.g., ChatGPT), the same principle applies: platforms will favor content and services that reflect authentic value, not those exploiting loopholes.
  • Long-Term Advantage: Practices that prioritize service and user benefit will naturally gain better visibility as platforms’ theoretical models of value improve.
  • Misplaced Effort: Investing disproportionate time and resources into chasing hacks is inefficient since platforms adapt quickly to eliminate these advantages.
  • Recommended Approach: Focus on building relationships, understanding client needs, and delivering genuine solutions to be rewarded by digital platforms in the longer term.

Let’s talk about marketing hacks. Things you can do to gain an unfair advantage um largely have been phased out. Yet, I still see a lot of people who engage with digital marketing or trying to market their practice to gain an advantage by putting energy, time, and resources into figuring out these hacks. A common example is the domain name URL. And people practice owners stress this thing so much that it becomes um almost crazy because it has such a small impact on the actual results. Yet they look to

00:00:37
include things like the city name. They look to include things like dental, dentistry, orthodontics. um because of the misconception that your URL matters significantly when it comes to the actual searches that people are going to make and where you show up. And for a long time, this was true. Hacks worked until it didn’t until it was so abused that platforms had to take steps to patch these out to basically remove these as an advantage. And what we see as a trend, as a big picture movement

00:01:17
across marketing as we know it, is a shift away from tactical advantages, shifts away from small hacks you can do to gain an advantage and towards real signals. And what I mean by real signals is actual behavior, actual benefit for the user. So things like the URL stop mattering as much as the actual engagement and the actual processes activity that goes on on the website. And when Google sees those actual behavioral signals telling Google that this is a valuable website, then it starts to rank higher. More than the

00:02:02
tactical stuff of having your H1 tags, having SEO optimized um alt text, all these tactical elements, we start to shift away. And what the process was was other platforms leveraging these tactics for the short short term to understand what the true signals were and then as soon as those true signals are identified that becomes the competitive advantage. So we have to start looking at what is actually beneficial for people. What actually causes value? What creates value? And when you understand that and

00:02:42
shun the tactics, start to ignore all the things that people stress out about. Well, not ignore completely, but start to not regard it as the ultimate priority a as the end all beall, then we can start to actually focus on the actual creation of value for the people we seek to serve. And when you do that, now what we see is the platforms support that instead. And so that’s a little rant because I feel like a lot of people focus too much on the tactical elements and they see marketing as a way to game the system in

00:03:20
order to gain an advantage. But really what marketing is is how can you leverage new technology, new ways of communication, new ways of presenting and connection connecting with people in order to create more value in the world to connect with more people to align with them and ultimately the ones that do that the best are going to be rewarded by the systems. The systems are there to the systems are always playing catch-up because they are creating a theoretical model of what value is. And the platforms that nail that theoretical

00:03:55
um theoretical model the best to true value. If they can align closest with what actually delivers value to patients, then that platform wins because every user will go on that platform rather than the other platforms. Right? So our goal should be to be the ones who are of creating true value and when you do that we just trust that eventually the systems will catch up. Another um example is AI chat. As new technology comes in people start focusing on the latest trends like what what other hacks can we do to be ahead

00:04:35
of the curve in terms of now AI chat like AI searching. So, if someone searches best dentist in Lakewood on um chat GPT or something, people stress out and put a lot of resources towards figuring out how they can be ranked um highly there. And again, it goes back to the idea that all these platforms are doing is trying to align to true value. And if they can align you better to true value than other platforms, then those then that engine that search engine wins. So instead of figuring out how we can

00:05:13
hack this one platform in order to rank a bit higher because even if you do sure you’ll get a bit of benefits but then as that platform realizes that it’s being hacked into generating results that aren’t favorable for itself because if it’s hackable it’s not a true reflection of true value. Then it starts to patch it and now all the effort and resources you’ve poured into getting that little hack disappears where the other practices who focused on creating more value, they get benefits

00:05:46
because they’ll be closer aligned to the truth of creating value. So I say all this to say we have to stop putting so much attention and resources into the tactics. Yes, it’s good to understand and work with, but we can’t make that the main thing. We have to make service for the people we seek to serve. We have to make their wants and desires the forefront of the business. And that is in a way the most effective marketing that you can do. Everything else falls into place once you get that figured out. All right, so

00:06:24
that’s it for this video. If you want to see what it’s like to actually find that out, find figure out what desired feelings they want, what is it that they want, how can you align your practice to that, how figure out who you’re who you’re trying to serve, figure out what change you want to bring about.
