We Design Consistent Psychological Changes

This section explains the marketing engine that creates the behavioral change we want. Since we already established that change is purely psychological, the entire system operates on psychology, not demographics. We don’t care about age, ethnicity, or appearance. We care about the psychological state someone is in when they enter the system.

The system works by managing three internal elements:

🙂 → ([Beliefs → Meaning → Feelings] → Decision) → Change

The goal is to create consistent feelings among psychologically aligned people, which then lead to consistent decisions and predictable change.

Here’s how the engine works:

  1. Beliefs come first.

Every person enters the system with thousands of beliefs shaped by childhood, culture, environment, and lived experience. Beliefs are complex, subconscious, and highly personal. For our purposes, beliefs are effectively unchangeable, and trying to change them often backfires because it invalidates someone’s identity and triggers defensiveness.

  2. Beliefs interact with events to form meaning.

The same event can produce very different meanings depending on someone’s beliefs.

    • If I believe dentists are trustworthy, a crown recommendation feels caring.

    • If I believe dentists exploit patients, the same recommendation feels predatory.

Meaning is not determined only by beliefs. It is also filtered through:

    • Culture

    • Status

    • Past experience

These filters shape how we interpret events, and they vary by person and context.

  3. Meaning generates feelings.

Feelings are emotional responses to the meaning we assign.

    • Negative meaning creates closed, defensive, suspicious feelings.

    • Positive meaning creates open, trusting, receptive feelings.

Feelings determine how someone responds to the decisions inside your system.

  4. Feelings lead to decisions, which create change.

If we can consistently generate positive, aligned feelings among a consistent group of people, we can reliably predict their decisions and the change that follows.

Because of this engine, our focus becomes identifying who should enter the system. The right inputs are people with psychological patterns that produce consistent meaning and feelings when interacting with the system.

Beliefs are too complex to map directly, so the next step is determining how to choose the right psychological profiles for our inputs. That’s what the next video will cover.
