40. Why People Tell Friends
Next
A permission asset is built by identifying, attracting, and nurturing a group of people who want to hear from you and willingly grant you continued access to their attention. The work begins before anyone signs up. You first define exactly what value you will deliver, the feeling it will produce, and the format it will come in. You must deliver exactly what you promise, no more and no less, because trust is the foundation of this asset.
You create value by understanding your audience’s belief system profile and the desired feeling they want more of. Your content does not need to create a full transformation. It only needs to provide small, scalable moments that give them momentum or a taste of that feeling, whether through bite-sized insights, gentle reminders, or practical tools. After deciding the value, you choose the delivery method, such as email, SMS, video, or a membership-style feed.
You also decide where to store the people who opt in. This must be an owned list, not mixed into your patient database and not dependent on a rented platform. It can be a spreadsheet, CRM, or email service, as long as it is dedicated to those who have granted permission.
Once the value and delivery are defined, you craft the tension, change, and promise. You show the gap between where they are and where they want to be, offer the chance to join, and promise the specific value you will consistently provide. You then determine the touchpoint where people will join, such as a subscription form, a course module, or a call-to-action during an interaction.
Finally, you verify whether what you built is a true permission asset. You ask: Would they notice if I stopped sending it? Did they explicitly want to join? Am I delivering exactly what I promised? Am I respecting the boundary of not sending more or less than agreed?
A real permission asset requires patience and humility. You keep showing up, making promises and keeping them, and always centering what they care about instead of what you want. Over time, this creates trust, attention, and a durable asset that compounds for the life of the business.
