The Lens Of Past Experiences

  • Semiotics creates meaning through symbols, signs, and cultural associations. Nothing has inherent meaning, we assign it through shared understanding.

  • Mainstream audiences want safety, so brands use familiar, bland, minimal visuals. These trigger past experiences that feel predictable and risk free.

  • Early adopters want difference, not safety. They look for things that feel new, better, or misaligned with the mainstream pattern.

  • Pattern Match refers to something that fits expectations. It signals “more of the same,” which appeals to the mainstream but not early adopters.

  • Pattern Break disrupts expectations. It triggers curiosity and positions the offering as potentially better because it is meaningfully different.

  • Your job is to design pattern breaks using semiotics so early adopters interpret your touch point as new, aligned with their beliefs, and worth trying.
