Branding In 3 Minutes

  • Brand fits naturally into the semiotics and pattern-break framework.

A brand is essentially the expectations people form based on past experiences, symbols, and repeated patterns.

  • Your extremes create your brand.

If your extreme is “most accommodating,” your brand becomes the expectation of accommodation. The brand is not what you claim. It is what people reliably expect from you because of how you consistently break patterns.

  • Brand is expectation.

Tesla broke patterns through tech-forward design and minimalism. These pattern breaks created a predictable expectation. That expectation is their brand.

When Tesla later added features that contradicted minimalism, it violated the expectation, which means it violated its brand.

  • Brand is not a logo, vibe, or “premium” positioning.

These are superficial. True branding comes from the emotional expectation attached to your extremes, built through actual behavior and touch points.

  • You cannot declare a brand.

A brand forms only when your promise is experienced. If you make extreme claims but do not deliver, the result is not branding. It is broken trust.

  • Working definition:

Brand is the feeling and expectation patients carry about how you show up, based on the patterns you consistently break in service of your extremes.
