80% of his dental office growth came from word of mouth, and he confidently opened a 2nd office.

Summary

The speaker reflects on a past experience with a startup client who struggled to attract new patients despite extensive marketing efforts over seven months. Initially relying heavily on online ads and traditional marketing tactics focused on attention and awareness, the client saw minimal growth and eventually parted ways with the consultant. However, about a year later, the client reported significant growth primarily driven by word of mouth, enabling him to open a second office. This outcome prompted a shift in the speaker’s perspective on effective marketing strategies for dental practices and similar businesses.

Key Insights

  • Marketing Focus Shift: The traditional emphasis on attention, awareness, and paid advertising is becoming less effective and sustainable.
  • Word of Mouth as Primary Growth Driver: Approximately 80% of the client’s growth came from word of mouth, with only 20% attributed to online presence.
  • Changing Consumer Behavior: People increasingly reject overt advertising and prefer authentic recommendations from trusted sources.
  • Sustainability and Scalability: Word of mouth creates an organic growth cycle where each satisfied customer ideally refers multiple new clients, fostering exponential growth.
  • Human Connection Over Metrics: Success hinges on designing meaningful experiences and connections inside the practice rather than chasing algorithmic engagement or vanity metrics like clicks and likes.
  • Intentional Design of Word of Mouth: Simply delivering a great service isn’t enough; practices must actively design and encourage the sharing of positive experiences to amplify referrals.

Challenges with Traditional Marketing

  • High cost and effort to individually convince each potential patient.
  • Saturation and fatigue from constant promotions, discounts, and advertising.
  • Declining return on investment from typical digital marketing channels.
  • Frustration among dental practice owners who see diminishing results despite ongoing marketing spend.

Recommendations

  • Prioritize patient experience: Focus on delighting current patients so they naturally want to talk about the practice.
  • Create referral-friendly environments: Intentionally foster and facilitate word of mouth beyond just providing good service.
  • Shift mindset: Move away from chasing attention and prioritize authentic relationships and community-building.
  • Adopt long-term growth strategies: Understand that word of mouth growth is gradual but more sustainable and cost-effective.
  • Engage clients willing to embrace this approach: Some clients may be hesitant to abandon traditional marketing until it fails completely.

Additional Notes

  • The speaker offers a free course for those interested in learning how to design word of mouth into their practice.
  • The message emphasizes humility and adaptation in marketing strategies as the landscape evolves.

Back in the day, I worked with a client who I had promised that if he does these things that I recommend him that he’ll be able to get new patients and grow. He was a startup and um he had a completely new office, didn’t purchase it. So, he was working from the ground up and we ran or we ran ads, we did all these things and we did everything we could for about seven months and he barely got any results. And so understandably he left his uh we split ways and um I think it’s been about a year but about a year

00:00:38
later um he sends me a text after I had sent him a little package with with my new uh strategy book um he sent me a text saying that 80% of his growth came from word of mouth and about 20% comes from online presence. And he’s done that so well that now he’s been able to open a second office. And that was really humbling because the approach that I had took before was trying to fit a square peg into a circle hole where I thought that marketing was all about attention and awareness. And so

00:01:15
truly believing this and with the best intentions, I would promote this idea to other offices. But reality is shifting and I’m realizing this that the landscape has shifted more than ever that people don’t want to be shouted at. And word of mouth is becoming the main way of growing. The clients that I have, we’re slowly shifting them over to word of mouth. The ones who believe in it and the ones who want to do that work. Some clients, understandably, they want to keep doing what is working uh until it

00:01:47
doesn’t work. And I get it. They’re busy. They have other they have other priorities. Um, but it’s becoming more and more urgent that we stop focusing solely on awareness and attention. It’s really running out as a competitive advantage. It’s it’s not having ownership, having a rank one spot, all these things is not as impressive as being a dental practice that people search for, that people tell other people about. What we find is that it costs too much for you as an individual to go out and

00:02:24
advertise and try to convince each person. The more effective way is all those people you’re currently engaging with to delight them so much that they tell all their peers about it to increase the amount of people that each person who comes into the office talks about. If one person comes in, have them talk to two people. Those two people come in, have them talk to four. And that’s the idea. So, we focus so much on attention and awareness, this hype and hustle and promotions and discounts,

00:02:56
and it’s really getting people frustrated, not just the audience who’s listening to it, but the dental practice owners themselves who are trying to engage with this and aren’t seeing the results that they were seeing before. And so my message and my realization for you is to focus on the actual human connection, not the algorithms, not the engagement, not the numbers, the metrics, the clicks and likes and all this stuff, but focus on the connection that happens inside the office and also outside. How

00:03:30
can you engage in your practice to deliver a great experience inside but also expand that so that it goes outward as well and that’s going to be through word of mouth mainly. I’m ranting here but I I think you get the idea. It’s it’s crucial now to start engaging in this work of designing word of mouth into your practice that some people can come to your office, have a great experience and not spread the word because you didn’t design it to spread and we get to do this intentionally.
